Prioritizing Life's Unexpected Challenges: A Life Lesson in Behavioral Financial Planning

When Butch got cancer last year, among other things, this meant putting together a special diet for him and taking extra care of him.  His diet consisted of chicken breasts, brown rice, sweet potatoes, chicken liver, cabbage, and a few other ingredients. This was cooked a few times a week, plus his daily treats. I don't regret spending this time with him.

Gym time was less important than going on extra walks/adventures with him and bringing along his favorite toy.  We made a lot of new memories because priorities don’t always correspond to time at the gym or meal prepping.

The picture below reminds me how life can throw you curve balls.  Throwing together a covid era attempt at a healthy meal when you have other priorities is something which many people could relate.  The post also reminds me of a different moment when gym time was less important than hitting the books. Studying to become a CFP is one of the reason's I own a practice today and proved to be a good investment in myself, but if body building were a part of the CFP exam or the MBA, then that would not have worked out as well for me.

"Quarantine chicken finger on oatmeal breakfast. This is really gonna reverse my CFP®"

Butch became steadily more sick because of the cancer and when I cooked less for myself we had more time because life was a little easier. This resulted in what could have been considered cheat weeks or what seemed like cheat months.  I digress, because less cooking/meal prepping for myself has nothing to do with my practice, the work, my expertise, or performance. The point is that my time with Butch was more important than being at the gym or cooking for myself.

Bulldog Financial Planning understands that people focus on their priorities in life, become experts in what they do, and that this does not look the same for everyone. As a fiduciary company, Bulldog Financial Planning works to understand what is most important to clients and does not have an affiliate dictating what to recommend.

BFP acts with care, skill, prudence and diligence to understand your goals, financial situation, risk tolerance, objectives, life circumstances, challenges, and changing priorities.  These are key business and ethical standards of my practice.

It’s not only about being a CFP® professional or having an MBA.

You’re going to work with who you like
